One of my goals for 2009 is to help another mom get started in her own business. I figured the best way to do that would be to bring in an intern, someone who can learn by working with me what its like on a daily or weekly basis to work online and what its like to start and build your own business.
This will be a two-way street, a mutually beneficial working relationship because not only will I be able to free up some time to develop some of my own projects, this person will receive the training and experience they can use to then start their own business.
So here’s what I have in mind:
- A 3 month commitment of approximately 5 hours per week
- A genuine desire to learn what it takes to be a self-employed web worker
- Willingness to deal with even the mundane tasks
- Attention to detail with excellent proofreading skills
- Basic knowledge of WordPress, Google Docs, Firefox, Open Office and Skype
- Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner
- Excellent communication skills
- Willing to accept feedback
- Desire to learn new skills
The ideal candidate will have a fairly flexible schedule, patience, a sense of humor, desire to learn new things and an open mind. I do tend to be outspoken and may use a few 4-letter words so I’d want you to be comfortable with working with me. You’ll also need to sign a Non-Compete and Non-Disclosure agreement.
Some of the tasks I’ll be delegating include proofreading, article submissions, submitting blog posts with images, managing email, scheduling podcast guests, and others.
Some of the things I hope to teach this person is working with graphics, the technical side of WordPress, networking, marketing, and creating and promoting ebooks and newsletters.
How to apply
Send me an email to April (at) AprilTara (dot) com with a subject line indicating you are applying for the intern position.
Tell me about your skills, your experience, what you know and what you want to learn, and what your goals are for starting your own business. Tell me about your strengths and weaknesses, what you hope to gain from this position, and why you are interested in the position.
I don’t need anyone to suck up to me, I just want you to be honest with me about your hopes and expectations. Don’t be afraid to toot your own horn and don’t be afraid to confess your shortcomings.
I don’t expect anyone to be perfect and I hope you don’t expect me to be either! I have my own struggles. I’m still growing my own business and working to achieve my own goals so I hope to find someone who is willing to grow with me. And even though this is an unpaid position, I am in the process of developing a virtual team of people who I can work with to meet clients’ needs so my intentions are to eventually outsource paying gigs to this person once the internship is completed.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask! I’m looking forward to hearing from you!
